    Golf League Updated

This week is the final week of the season, and we have a showdown between Bill & Mike T. to win the 2012 championship. Although Mike was guaranteed a spot in the finals coming in to last week, Steve almost managed to squeak in with a tie. If Terry and Bill had golfed, it most likely would have happened, as Mike golfed like crap and Steve shot his best score of the season.

Regardless, Mike is going for an unprecedented third consecutive championship. Previously, he’s defeated Matt V. in 2010 and Dave B. (me) in 2011. This year, he faces off against Bill and needs to win by 3 strokes as his handicap is 2.4 strokes lower. Hopefully its an exciting match, and good luck to both golfers!

I’ll have final payouts ready for everyone by final golf next weekend, and if you’re in attendance, I’ll hand them out there. If not, I’ll give it to you the next time I see you.

Good luck and see you on the course!

    Golf League Updated

This week is the last week of the 2nd half, and it looks like Mike has it all wrapped up again. Although Steve is not mathematicaly eliminated yet, he needs to take 6 points and Mike needs to get shut out. Even if Steve golfs very well and Mike blows it, we’ve only had 6 “in the money” golfers 2 times this half. Looks like Mike will be going for his 3rd consecutive championship.

I’ve been looking at the scores and thinking about how to better represent everyone’s average. None of us are pros so we all go though inconsistent periods of time, which can skew our averages. For example, Jeff in the first half and Mike in the second half this year. I think it might be better to keep a rolling average of 12 scores and drop the highest 4 in order to get a more consistent average going. The rolling average would pull scores back from previous seasons, unless that golfer didn’t have any previous seasons. I have all the data to do it, but I’ll have to review in greater detail to see what the effect is.

Finally, Bill dropped a score last week with Jay to follow after this week.

    Golf League Updated

I know everyone looks forward to not reading all the witty comments I write in here weekly, but after a 2 week layoff I don’t even remember what is going on now so this is it.

The only real news of note is Steve, Mike L., and Matt all dropped a score.

    Golf League Updated

Wow, week 11 (week 4 of 2nd half) had some pretty low scores! Every “in the money” player shot either their lowest score, tied for lowest score, or second lowest score of the season. Ultimately, Mike took another 6 points with his season best (and one stroke short of tying a personal best) score of 34. Great round Mike! However, he’ll have a more difficult time holding on to his lead as his handicap continues to drop, now standing at 4.2. I think we’ll have a fun home stretch to the 2nd half!

After re-adding the scores, I mistakenly told Bill he shot a 38 when actually he shot a 40. Still a great round, but it dropped him 2 places in the ranks this week, meaning Steve and I moved up one spot. Sorry Bill! I’m sure no big deal as you await your 2nd half winning opponent.

Finally, there was some talk of having a Saturday “Trachsel Vacation” special golf day since all but 2 “in the money” players will be absent on Monday the 23rd. I think this is a fair condition considering the vast majority of the league will miss and we have always allowed people to make up time if they know they will miss. We will discuss and decide next week.

    Golf League Updated

After 3 weeks of the 2nd half, we have a pretty good race going. Mike, Terry, and Steve are all within 4 points of each other and Jay and I are not out of reach either. Steve came out of his shell this week and crushed the competition to win low net. Looks like he’s trying for a reverse of last year – golf crappy at the end of the season instead of at the beginning… smart.

Speaking of Steve, there was a dispute over his score from week 8 (I think). Apparently there was a large discrepancy over the final score, but it appears to be a math error on the scoresheet because when adding each individual hole correctly, the final number was different. However, the caveat is hole #8 had a sloppy number written on it so maybe Steve can verify his score. The point is please write your scores neatly and double check your addition to avoid scoring issues.

Good luck and see you on the course!

Well the sandbagger Mike strikes again, with another “amazing” round to take low net this week. Mike is 2 for 2 in sub-40 rounds the second half after going 0 for 4 in the first half. Wow, did you take lessons??? Hmmmm…

There was a mistake in skins last week as Jay didn’t even bother to write my scores down on the calculation sheet. Thanks Jay, I know I suck but you could at least pretend I might win a skin. For your information, I actually did manage to bogey #8 thank you very much. This causes one of Mike’s skins to be canceled so he owes Bill and Jay a buck. Yay Tri-V!!!

    That is all.

Good luck and see you on the course!

    sand·bag (sndbg)
    n.
A bag filled with sand and used as ballast, in the formation of protective walls, or as a weapon.
    v.intr. Slang
To downplay or misrepresent one’s ability in order to deceive someone, especially in gambling.

I think I’m looking for the second definition… Let me introduce you Mike Trachsel. Nice round Mike, but let me give you some advice. Besides sudden, unexpected, and miraculously improved play, what’s the #1 tell-tale sign of a sandbagger? The guy who walks into the “19th hole” and starts defending himself from sandbagging immediately before even announcing his score. The second sign is shooting 7 below your average. At least you didn’t dedicate an entire season to playing like crap so you could dominate everyone only to blow it at the end. Hmmmm….. Just kidding Mike (and Jeff), nice round.

The only serious news for this week is Bill, Jay, and Steve dropped a score last week with Jeff to follow the next time he golfs.

Good luck and see you on the course!

    Golf League Updated

Today is week 8 and is the first week of the 2nd half. Its like a fresh new season; all your bad golfing has been erased, and you can take the chance to win it again… or just keep golfing like crap, your choice.

We had a tight race to close out the first half between Bill and Jeff, but Bill was able to maintain and extend his slight lead to secure his position in the finals at the end of the year. Jeff needed a two stroke win, but came up three stokes short as handicaps were a factor. However regardless of handicaps, Bill won the match straight up by one stroke. Consistentcy finally paid off as Bill’s scoring standard deviation was by far the lowest, enabling him to slowly chip away and finally overtake Jeff’s commanding lead.

Congratulations Bill, and good luck to everyone this 2nd half!

Good luck and see you on the course!

    Golf League Updated

Today is week 7 and is the last week of the 1st half. Its a tight race to the finish line as Bill and Jeff are neck and neck with only 0.5 points separating the two. Looks like the first half all comes down to one round for both of them.

As for the rest of us, we’ve all been mathematically eliminated from the 1st half. Better luck next half and lets try to get some points anyway.

Good luck and see you on the course!

    Golf League Updated

Well I guess I spoke too soon, as the first half just got a little tighter. With Jeff getting shut out and Bill scoring 5 points, there is a possibilty for Bill tying or overtaking Jeff for the first half, as he’s trailing by just 5 points. With just two weeks of golf left in the first half, it looks like we might have a close race down the stretch after all!

FYI #1: Hopefully everyone was aware we did not golf last week (5/28) due to Memorial Day. This is the standard condition as far as I can remember, so hopefully there was no confusion.

FYI #2: Three golfers (Mike L., Mike T., and myself) dropped a score this week, as we have golfed four weeks overall. Terry will potentially drop a score this week assuming he golfs.

Good luck and see you on the course!
