    December President’s Message

It’s hard to believe another year is coming to a close. I hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving. Now it is time to set our sights on the impending holiday season. We will kick that off this weekend with marbles on Saturday evening for all those marble players and our annual Children’s Christmas party on Sunday. This has always been a favorite event of mine, and for the first time in a few years my family will be able to make it and the kids are excited to able to spend some time with their Tr-V family. I hope to see everyone there.

The holidays provide us many opportunities to get together, some time off work, a chance to travel perhaps, and a list of things to do that seems to never end. Sometimes it’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the holidays. I encourage everyone to find some time to reflect on your blessings whether they be many or few. Be kind and generous; for your kindness and generosity are a blessing to others. Have a very merry Christmas and a happy 2019.

    TO OUR MILITAY AND VETERANS

    THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS

IN HONOR OF ALL OUR VETERANS AND CURRENT MILITARY PERSONNEL

It was the night before Christmas he lives all alone , They all enjoy freedom each month of the year,

In a one bedroom house made of plaster and stone. Because of soldiers like the one laying here,

I had come down the chimney with presents to give, I couldn’t help but wonder how many lay alone

And to see just who in this home did live. On a cold Christmas Eve in a land far away from home.

I looked all about a strange sight I did see, The very thought brought a tear to my eye,

No tinsel, no presents not even a tree, I dropped to my knees as I started to cry,

No stockings by the mantel, just boots filled with sand. The soldier awakened and I heard a rough voice,

On the wall hung pictures of far distant lands. “Santa, don’t cry. This life is my choice,

He had medals and badges, awards of all kind, I fight for freedom, I don’t ask for more.

And a sober thought came through my mind. My life is my God, my Country, my Corps.”

For this house was different, it was dark and dreary, The soldier rolled over and drifted to sleep,

I found the home of a soldier, once I could see clearly. I couldn’t control it, I continued to weep.

The soldier lay sleeping, silent; alone I kept watch for hours, so silent, so still,

Curled up on the floor of this one bedroom home and we both shivered from the night’s cold chill,

The face so gentle, the room in such disorder, I didn’t want to leave on that dark, cold night,

Was this the hero of whom I’d just read? This guardian of honor so willing to fight.

Curled up on a poncho, the floor for a bed? Then the soldier rolled over with a soft voice

    and pure,

I realized the families that I saw that night Whispered, “Carry on Santa. It’s Christmas

Owed their lives to these soldiers who are willing All is secure.”

to fight. Soon around the world, the children would play

And grown-ups would celebrate a bright Christmas Day.

    THE LARDINS

November was a busy month for Judy and John. Between the TRI-V activities, John having chemo twice and a eight day trip to Texas to celebrate Thanksgiving with son Larry and his family (19 for dinner) and grandson’s Jacob birthday and Christmas and trip to Caesars to see Lord Of The Dance and Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys it was exhausting. The weather in Texas was dreary, rain and no higher than 55 degrees. The Thanksgiving dinner was unique, not quite what we are used to. John continues on chemo maintenance every two weeks and is preparing to make the necessary arrangements to have chemo in Florida. There plans are to leave right after News Year Day. For all in our TRI-V Family and friends please continue to remember them in your prayers. They continue to work for me and all others.

    DECEMBER MEMORIES

MEMORIES FROM THE DECEMBER 2008 ISSUE OF TRI-V UMPH

The health of our members was much better than in Dec. 2003. Two of our long time members, Bill Suchner and Earl Tishler were in need of our prayers. Bill was rushed to the hospital on Nov. 14 with severe pain on his right side. Bill was diagnosed with a hernia and was operated on that same night and was sent home the following day with instructions not to life anything more than 5 pounds, no golfing and no driving until he saw the doctor. Earl on the other hand was moved to Oakwood Commons, Dearborn, and independent living community on Dec. 6. It was a hard decision for daughter, Susie, to make but was necessary for Earl’s safety and security. We ask you to remember Bill, Earl and all others of the Tri-V family in need of our prayers. This is the time of year when many are traveling or having out of town guests in for the holidays. Karlyn and Tim Gies had their daughter Lisa and family in from PA for the Thanksgiving holiday while Jacqui and Jack Schaefer had their daughter Stacy and the two grandchildren coming in from Japan for two weeks. The Schaefers are then going to Bloomington IN to celebrate Thanksgiving with son Mark and family. Peg and Bob Wendt and Kathie and Art Dushary along with Shirley and Bill Suchner spent Thanksgiving at Peg and Bob’s daughter Carole in Vero Beach FL. John and Judy Lardin along with Mike and Bev spent the Thanksgiving weekend at Judy’s mom in IL. Upon their return Judy and John went to Corpus Christi TX to celebrate the second birthday of grandson Jacob. The story goes that each time Kim took a Christmas decoration of Santa Claus, Jacob would pick it up or point and say “Grandpa.” John cannot see how Jacob sees any resemblance between Santa and Him. There was an article explaining the concept of the Tri-V Girls Club and encouraging all wives, significant others, fiancées, daughters to join them monthly. The Christmas dinner for the Wives was set for Dec. 17 at the House of Ing, Farmington. The Council Party was set for Jan. 17 at Cranberries Café, Goodrich for a Murder Mystery Dinner. Pinochle standings through Dec. play had Robyn Mackson in first place with 93 points, Bud Massoll in second with 77 points and John Mackson in third place with 76 points.

MEMORIES FROM THE DECEMBER 2013 ISSUE OF TRI-V UMPH

The Council party is scheduled for January 18, 2014 at Dakota Inn Rathskeller. The Dakota Inn is the only authentic German bar and restaurant. Cashman’s hosted December pinochle and the big winners was Bob Kuhr with 23.5 points in first place, Cal Cashman with 22.5 points in second place and Jeff Trachsel in third place with 20 points. The Schaefer’s hosted November pinochle and the big winner was Romas Bliudzius with 40 points. The Tri-V Wives Christmas luncheon was held at Ginapolis Bar-B-Q Smokehouse December 11, Farmington Hills. The children’s Christmas party was held on December 8 at Eddie Edgar Ice Arena in Livonia. There were 49 adults, 2 perspectives, and 32 children in attendance. Pinochle standings through December had Romas Bliudzius in first place with 82.5 points, Bob Kuhr in second place with 81.5 points, and Jane Trachsel in third place with 81 points. This wraps up another trip down memory lane. In 2003 the list of those celebrating birthdays from the 14th of Dec. to the 7th of Jan had nine members of the Tri-V Family. Today of the nine there are only two still with us. Pray for those that have left us. For the Christmas greetings there were 25 in 2003 and 24 in 2008. Unfortunately the count has not changed much over the years. Did the invitation published by the girl’s club to encourage more participation have any drawing power? This is the holiday season that we can think back, reflect with our family members and friends how it was when we grew up or even how it was 15 or 20 years ago, such precious memories. This is also the time of the year that we should take a minute to thank “The MAN” for all we have to pray for those less fortunate than we are. The special gift we have is our Tri-V family to be here for us when in need, to help share in the bad times and the happiness in the good times. There are many memories that do not appear in The Umph because they do not involve the Club and are personal to each other lives and families. Still take the time to share those with your children, grandchildren and friends. We are given one of our most precious gifts, OUR MEMORIES. REMEMBER, MEMORIES ARE THE GREATEST TREASURES THAT TIME CANNOT DESTROY. THEY ARE THE HAPPY PATHWAY TO YESTERDAY’S BRIGHT JOY! Until we see you in print next month, the Good Lord willing, take care of each other and Merry Christmas, Happy New Year.

    CHRISTMAS GREETING

What a wonderful time of the year as we get ready to celebrate the birth of the Christ Child. He came from such humble beginnings and gave His life so we might be able to enjoy ours. We thank Him every day for all the blessings He has bestowed upon us and our TRI-V Family. He looks after each of us as we also look after each Club Member sharing in their joys and sorrows throughout the year. We are fortunate to be a member of such a wonderful and caring group of people. May we all share in the joys of His Birthday as we wish everyone a very, very Merry Christmas and a joyful and prosperous New Year. All our love to you, Judy and John Lardin
