The Kuhrs’ 2017 Western Trip Sherry and I…

    The Kuhrs’ 2017 Western Trip

Sherry and I left on our trip on May 12 accompanied by my brother John (aka Buddy) and his wife Linda. We drove 4,276 miles through 12 states, some of them for a very brief time (Idaho and Indiana).

Our first stop was in Lanesboro, Minnesota. There we stayed at The Cottage House Inn, a quaint 15-room hotel in a small town off the beaten track. The next day we made a stop at the Mystery Caves where Sherry slipped on the wet iron grating and fell on her tailbone. Ouch! But she was a real trooper and kept on going, although with a good deal of pain. That day we also toured the Spam Museum in Austin, MN. It sounds hokey, but our tour guide told us the story how our armed services spread the use of Spam through Europe, Asia, and Australia. We then ate lunch at the Piggy Blues Restaurant across the street from the museum. I think you could describe Austin as pig hell.

Our next stop was in Mitchel, South Dakota. We checked out the Corn Palace there, but we could not go inside, since it was closed the one evening we were there. However, the exterior view was impressive. Then on our way to Rapid City, we drove through the Badlands National Park. This was one of the highlights of our trip and definitely worth seeing. Just north of there is the city of Wall, where we visited the famous Wall Drugs. My impression of Wall Drugs is that it is just an oversized souvenir shop. But it may be worth the stop being so close to the Badlands. After arriving in Rapid City, we visited Mount Rushmore to view one of the most iconic sites in the nation. It’s amazing what skilled people can do with tons of dynamite. The next day, we went on a bus tour of the Black Hills. One of this areas claim to fame is the filming of Dancing With Wolves. As we left Rapid City, we stopped at Bear Country, a drive thru animal park. Sounds corny, but it was enjoyable. We especially enjoyed seeing the bear cubs frolicking about and playing with one another. This was a favorite of my bear-loving brother.

When we arrived in Cody, Wyoming we were told that it was snowing in Yellowstone and the park would be closed for that day and the next. While it snowed in Yellowstone, it just rained in Cody. So we spent the better part of two days touring the six museums that are part of the Buffalo Bill Cody Wild West Museums. By now we saw that my brother read even more of the exhibits than I do. Finally we were able to drive through Yellowstone. It was impressive how well they had plowed as we drove on clear roads banked high with snow. Of course we saw Old Faithful erupt and the paint pots, but one of the roads was closed due to damage preventing us from getting to all the sites we wanted to see. After passing through Yellowstone, we stayed in Jackson. From Jackson we toured the Grand Teton National Park. Although it was somewhat cloudy, we still enjoyed the beauty of those majestic mountains. Just south of the park, we visited the National Animal Museum. Here we enjoyed some great artwork of the west.

In Moab, Utah we went on a three-hour cruise on the Colorado River a very small part of which went through Canyon Land National Park. Fortunately our boat was not named the Minnow. Our guide told us that many films and commercials were shot in this area, some of them claiming to be shot in the Grand Canyon where it is very difficult to get a permit to film. The most interesting story he told was about the filming of the scene from Thelma and Louise where they drove off a cliff. The following day we drove through Arches National Park. Guess what, we saw some impressive looking arches.

In the southwest corner of Colorado we stopped at Mesa Verde National Park. There we saw the ruins of the cliff dwellings occupied by the local Indians in the 13th century. The last major stop on our trip was Manitou Springs, Colorado just outside Colorado Springs. Here we visited The Garden of the Gods, a park containing some spectacular rock formations. We even saw a number of people scaling to the tops of these natural skyscrapers. On our way from Manitou Springs, we stopped at the Air Force Academy. At the visitor center we viewed a film illustrating the life of the cadets at the academy, which was very interesting. We also visited the chapel there. It was impressive.

Then we started the long drive home through Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, and Indiana. Upon arriving home, we all agreed that we had a great trip. I also noted that I spent more time with my brother in the last two weeks than I had in the last 50 years. Sherry and I agreed that Buddy and Linda are good traveling companions.

    MAY MEMORIES

MEMORIES FROM THE MAY 2007 ISSUE OF TRI-V UMPH

We are saddened by the news that Ray Suchner, our founder of TRI-V, passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home in Traverse City on May 13th at the age of 89. What a wonderful man and cannot ever have thanked him enough for his vision in starting the TRI-V Club. He and Dorothy would have been married 68 years in June. Our prayers go out to Dorothy and the Suchner family. Others in need of our prayers are Peg Wendt who still needs a lot of assistance. She can manage her walker in the house but mostly needs the wheelchair when she is out and Terry Dunham whose shoulder is “all messed up.” Shoulder surgery is set for June 13th which should correct his problems but make it a long summer of therapy. Lastly is Curt Marti who suffered a fracture of the 7 vertebrae in his neck from a motorcycle accident on May 14th. Please remember all in your prayers. Visitors in the area included Jan and Cal Cashman’s daughter, Kathy and family from Arizona and Kim and Larry Lardin and family from San Antonio, TX for a week in June. Before the visit Judy Lardin spent a week at her Mom’s home in Illinois and Gina and Brian Lardin have moved into their new home in South Lyon, 8/10s of a mile from the club house of Coyote. Plans have been finalized for the 70th Anniversary Party the weekend of June 22nd at McGuire’s Resort in Cadillac, MI. The Tri-V Picnic will be July 15th at Gunnar Metalla Park, Wixom. Final Pinochle was held April 4th at Madonna University, Livonia with 43 in attendance. Lynn Barnes was the winner of the 2006-2007 TRI-V Pinochle Season for the second consecutive season. How many of the special Anniversary Parties can you remember the 50th on Mackinac Island, 60th in Indiana and 70th in Cadillac?

MEMORIES FROM THE MAY 2012 ISSUE OF TRI-V UMPH

Our prayers went out to Karen Thrift who spent two days in the hospital trying to pass a 1 ½ inch kidney stone and had blocked off her kidney and created an infection. They put in a stint and she has to return May 9th to remove the stint and kidney stone.

Congratulations to Karen’s Grandson who will be graduating from U o=f D Mercy with two bachelor degrees and pre law certificate. John is also a U.S. Marine reservist.

Judy Lardin had to make an emergency trip to IL as her mother was having some heart issues. After test they determined it was caused by some medication and the problem was corrected. Mike Lardin has been off work for two weeks with an inflamed Achilles tendon and has been wearing a special boot. While Judy was in IL John was finalizing their plans for the condo rental in Ft. Myers. Same complex but different condo.

The TRI-V Women’s May dinner was set for May 16th at Bahama Breeze, Livonia, and May Open House set for May 19th at Gateway Golf Club, Romulus, and the 75th TRI-V Anniversary Party the weekend of June 23rd is Chelsea, the Steak Roast on Aug. 11th at Mettala Park, Wixom and finally Final Golf the weekend of Aug.17th in Gaylord.

This wraps up another trip down memory lane. It does not seem that we are ready to celebrate the 80th Anniversary of THE CLUB. Once again it is time to share our memories ouse wasHouse

with the younger Club Members. Make them aware of the effort that has been put into making the Club last this long. It takes a lot of “Loyalty, Co-operation and Friendship to make this happen. Until we see you next month, the Good Lord willing, take care of one another.

    JOHN LARDIN UPDATE

Happy to report the latest news on John is 99% good. As most know our trip home from Fl was uneventful. With us sharing the driving we made it home in two days. Part of the reason we left early is Judy’s birthday was April 3rd and I thought the perfect present was agreeing to leave early so Judy could get home to Alyssa. I was able to continue with my chemo maintenance and had a cat scan done and results indicate the tumor has reduced another 20%. Now we are at a total of close to 50% reduction in the tumor. LIVING PROOF THAR PRAYERS DO WORK. Please, please keep them coming not only for me but all fellow family, TRI-V and friends that need them for various reasons. I will be off the avastan for two treatments to allow some necessary dental work to be done. See all soon and keep the prayers coming. They do work. John and Judy

    HAPPY MOTHERS DAY

FOR ALL MOTHERS AND GRANDMOTHERS ON MOTHERS DAY

We have printed this before but feel it is worth repeating with all the new Mothers we have in TRI-V the last couple of years.

… And God Created A Mother

When the Good Lord was creating mothers, he was into his sixth day of overtime when the angel appeared and said “You’re doing a lot of fiddling around on this one…Six pairs of hands? No Way!”

“It’s not the hands that are causing me problems,” said the Lord. “It’s the three pairs of eyes…one pair that sees through closed doors when she asks,”What are u kids doing in there?…Another here in the back of her head that sees what she shouldn’t but what she has to know. And, of course, the ones here in the front that can look at a child who goofs up and says, “I understand and I love you.” without so much as uttering a word…”

The angel circled the model very slowly “It’s too soft,” she sighed.

“But tough!” said the Lord excitedly. You cannot imagine what this mother can do or endure.

    “Can it think?”

“Not only can it think, but it can reason and compromise and dream,” said the Creator.

Finally the angel bent over and ran her finger across the cheek. “There’s a leak,” she pronounced. “I told you you were trying to put too much into the model.”

“It’s not a leak,” said the Lord. “It’s a tear.”

    “What’s it for?”

“It’s for joy, sadness, disappointment, pain, loneliness and pride.”

“You’re a genius,” said the angel.

The Lord looked somber. “I didn’t put it there.”

    Updated Final Golf Information

I know we have talked to most people about this but here is the latest information on Final Golf

We received word that Ray’s Retreat has been sold and will not be able to accommodate our group for Final Golf this year. Ray’s has been an excellent location for our group for many years now and will be difficult to replace, especially for the price we have been paying. Jeff, Brian and I have been calling around looking for a replacement venue and we think we have found something that should work really well.

We have tentatively booked rooms and tee times for up to 32 men at Lakewood Shores Resort, “Home of The Gailes” for arrival on Friday, August 18, 2017, and departure on Sunday, August 20, 2017. , in Oscoda, MI

We looked at including breakfast and dinner provided by the resort each day but this really added to the cost of the package. A breakfast buffet is available both mornings for approx. $14. The price is the same whether we include it in the package or not so we opted to not include it and those that would like to go still can.

We are able to rent grills from the resort and bring our own, so we are looking at preparing dinner for the group by our rooms one or both nights.

The estimated cost for this will be $330 which will include 2 nights hotel, three rounds of golf and up to 2 dinners cooked by the committee and volunteers.

Anyone interested can add UNLIMITED GOLF AND CART FOR $27.00 per person.

A deposit of $100.00 pp will be due by May 8, 2017 to Mike Trachsel or Jeff Trachsel. If you need more time on the deposit just let us know asap so we can get an accurate total.

The current plan for golf is:

Friday……….. 18 holes of golf and cart on “The Serradella” starting at 11:01
Format: Individual/Choose the best drive in your group and play your own ball from there.
Saturday ……. 18 holes of golf and cart on “Blackshire” starting at 10:10
Format: Team/Modified Better Ball – Choose the best drive in your group and play your own ball from there. The lowest three team member scores added together will count for the team score
Sunday ………. 18 holes of golf and cart on “The Gailes” starting at 10:30
    Format: Team/Scramble

We will also have unlimited use of the 18 hole pitch and putt course, The Wee Links, which is located directly behind the hotel. We can also bring cornhole, washer toss etc. and play out back of our rooms.

For anyone that would like to come in a day early or stay later, take advantage of this special for your group:
Stay Two Nights and get the Third Nights Lodging for just $34.00 PER PERSON (plus tax) for lodging only OR
$64.00 p/p (plus tax) for a golf package which would include lodging & 18 holes with cart on your choice of The Gailes, Blackshire or Serradella
